Not much, I was just familiar with its syntax and used few times (ready-made documents) in my java/j2ee projects.

Around 4 hours a day for about 2 weeks.

I found "XML Master tutorial" very helpful. I started with that, and then went through book "XML Bible" for detailed view of some specific topics like (Schema, DTD, XSLT and XPath), and finally tried mock exam (http://www.xmlmaster.org/en/practice_exam/).

You must have good understanding of fundamental topics, this exam mostly tests your practical approach so try to execute/experiment everything (both valid and invalid) yourself.
